The One Book Every New Dad Should Read

by Graham on March 13, 2010

What is the best book for new Dads? This is one book that every expectant father or new Dad should have on their bookshelf: The New Father: A Dad’s Guide to the First Year (Mitchell Beazley Heath).

This book covers the first year of baby’s life with a chapter for every month.  The book is highly structured, so ideal for men to read, and starts by talking about the development milestones the baby may have reached – a section which Mums and Dads will love to read.

What makes this better than the other dad guides out there is that it also covers what Mum might be going through, so that their partner can be aware and understand, as well as what the man himself might be going through.  I was amazed when the book accurately predicted that in month two or three  I would be stepping back and re-evaluating my entire career.  It also gave plenty of advice on how to go through that process.

It’s great to have a book that covers the developments, emotions and highlights of the first year of baby’s life, but covering what happens to baby, Mum and Dad.  Dads are often in the unique position of having to pay close attention to all three, as well as managing other stakeholders such as parents and in-laws.  This book is a great help to getting it right.

Changing nappies, feeding baby, bottles, weaning, vaccinations, health worries, colic – it’s all covered here.  The New Father would make an excellent present, a great gift idea for the new or expectant Dad.
