We own the place we live in at the moment, but as we’re not quite ready to buy a house in Brighton yet, we’re going to rent.
As it’s been a few years since I’ve rented, I’ve forgotten what a fiasco the whole renting business it.
Estate agents really seem to earn their bad reputation through lettings. They have a charge to levy against almost everything. Administration charges, referencing charges, check in inventory, check out inventory. I know we are being had, but as it’s me and several thousand others, what can I do?
What annoys me most about the letting agent setup is how they are charging both sides. Estate agents levy countless costs against the landlord too, not to mention charge them 10-20% a month out of the rental income just for being the middleman.
We should not be in the rental market too long, and it’s a great way to get a taster for an area, not to mention a new town, without jumping right into the commitment of a house purchase. There’s also the fact that I’m not quite sure where the property market is going next, so happy to sit it out for a while as a tenant.
