Brighton Calling: Commuting to London

by Graham on May 18, 2010

To say the least, tomorrow morning’s early start will be a shock to the system

We’ve had a few days to settle in to Brighton, but we’ve still got a mountain of boxes to unpack, no telephone line and most importantly no broadband to work from home!

To make the wait for broadband less of an issue, I signed up for internet tethering with O2, which essentially lets me use my iPhone as a modem on the 3G network.  However the service is patchy at best – every now and again it flies, with a nice fast connection speed, and then it stops entirely.

My plan to work from home two days a week can’t start until I’ve a decent broadband connection – so internet tethering isn’t going to be the answer.

Regardless of the status of broadband, I’m back in the office tomorrow.  My train from Preston Park to London Bridge is around 6.25 I think, which by my calculations has be out of bed at about 5.40am.  I don’t think I’ve ever started a day so early.  Back in London a few months back I had thought of starting to gradually get up earlier each morning, but couldn’t get up any day before 7.20.

To say the least, tomorrow morning’s early start will be a shock to the system.

My plan is to get into the office early, and leave early to beat the mad rush going back from London Bridge to Brighton.  In all likelihood I’ll probably have the same plan as everyone else, and coincide nicely with the peak rush for trains to Brighton.

I expect to be exhausted for a few months – every point of the journey will be new, my route unexplored and unknown, so the brain will be tired by the new stimuli.  In a few months I should be immune and able to make the journey from house to train, train to tube and tube to desk without having to wake up fully…..hopefully.
